The Lines "y" series are tools.

Tools are objects in service to create something else. A line is like a wrench is a tool, meaning that it is a device manipulated by the hand and used by a mechanic, plumber, carpenter, or other laborer to work, shape, move, or transform material… In the case of the artist, the line is a tool put in service to shape experience." - Matt Niebuhr
